“Damn, it’s cold,” said Dupont. “Babe, I’m glad you sent me back to get heavier gear.”

“Hmm-hmm. I told you. Kimmy doesn’t lie. When she tells you something, you better believe it.”

Kimmy raised an eyebrow at the transmission. Not at the friendly back and forth between Dupont and Karen, but only some mechs' heat worked. For those who didn’t, Ultraviolet’s crews installed small space heaters—the fat max was one of these, and the fix didn’t seem to be to Dupont’s liking. Should have taken better care of his mech. Kimmy shrugged it off. Her heater worked.

Kimmy led the way through a ten-foot drift created by the blizzard blowing from the north, breaking the trail for those in light mechs. Her towering Dawnbreaker easily pushed through the snow gathered on the mountain slope, allowing Nicole, in her firefly, and Lizzy, in her leopard, easier passage.

Both carried a copy of Athena. Their job was to get to the door identified by Athena and get inside. The rest of the troops would provide cover and help recover assets if needed. Kimmy hoped to bring home as much UEE tech as she could.

“This stuff is hell to see through,” said Flexi.

“At least you’re not eye level with it,” retorted Nicole.

Kimmy couldn’t see much beyond the blinding snow and shadows. The lights from her mech did little to pierce the driving snow. Only her radar kept the group on course and from stumbling into the mountainside cliff or—worse—falling over the edge. An opening upslope appeared on the radar as the group traversed the slope.

“I think I’ve found the entrance to the UEE bunker,” announced Kimmy. “Poison, take your troop and form a protective perimeter at the mouth of the draw. I will escort my troop to the target area.”

“Roger, we’re moving.”

To Kimmy’s right, the faster and more maneuverable medium mechs pushed through the snow toward the draw.

Out of the darkness came a pair of flashes that went over Kimmy.

“Hey! Look out. Something out there is rocking twin particle cannons!” As Kimmy announced the attack, she flipped through her visual assistants, trying to find where and what the attackers were. To her right, she saw the rear lights of Karen’s troop.

Kimmy turned her attention to getting her troop up the draw unmolested. She readied her weapons but would only fire if she had an opportunity. Her mission was to get Nicole and Lizzy to the door and defend.

The snow to her left lightened, and the upslope became gradual. “Ok, girls, I think this is it. Follow my left turn up the mountain.”

She received a pair of affirmatives as she eased her stick to the left, guiding her mech up the snowy path.

“Shit. I don’t know what these guys are,” squawked Zhi.

“Apocalypse, we’ve got four unknown bogeys on a raised position to our front. We’re forming a picket line to keep them off you. The mech computers can’t identify vehicle type or weapon type.”

“Roger. Keep them busy—”

“Break,” said Nicole. “Athena says they’re probably UEE drones left to guard the site.
